March is Women's History Month

In 1987, congress passed a law declaring March as “Women’s History Month.” While we honor women year round, March is the dedicated month to celebrate women of the past, present, and future. Sharing stories with your children about women’s achievements and accomplishments throughout history, will strengthen their understanding of the contributions they have not only made to America, but to the world.

PBS Kids celebrates women year-round with these programs featuring female leads: Word Girl, Peg + Cat, Pinkalicious, and Odd Squad. Check out the program schedule online at kued.org/whatson. You can also stream them live at kued.org/kids/video.

One influential woman from Utah is Martha Hughes Cannon. She was a physician, an advocate, a suffragette, and the first female senator in the United States! She was a remarkable Utah woman.

KUED’s documentary, Martha Hughes Cannon, is a great film for parents to watch in celebration of Women’s History Month.

After watching the documentary, share some of Martha’s story with your children. Download these activity pages, including the Martha Hughes Cannon coloring page, to remember the first female senator in the United States!
