Hi! It's Missy here, an artist and guest blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. I get excited about this time of year for many reasons, but the biggest is candy. If you're like me, you LOVE candy! I love chocolate, sour, gummy, and fruity treats. This week, we are making one of my favorite Fall delights- caramel apples.
Caramel Apples
Supplies:
- Eight COLD Granny Smith apples
- 3/8 c evaporated milk
- Two 11 oz. bags of caramels
- Toppings (crushed Oreos, nuts, chocolate chips, Skittles, etc)
- Eight lollipop sticks (or BBQ skewers)
- Large microwaveable bowl
- Big mixing spoon
- Microwave
- Wax paper
- Cookie sheet
Instructions:
- Press one lollipop stick into the center of each cold apple.
- Unwrap the caramels and put them into a bowl.
- Add 3/8 cup evaporated milk.
- Put the bowl in the microwave and melt the caramels at 30 second intervals, stirring in between. It takes about 6 rounds of this to get the caramel melted.
- Dip each apple into the caramel, twisting it around so the caramel covers the whole apple.
- Dip each caramel covered apple into one of the toppings.
- Set the caramel apple on a wax-paper lined cookie sheet to cool.
- Sprinkle with more toppings to fill in any gaps.
- After they have cooled, eat your delicious apples and enjoy!
Wrap-up:
It's fun to try many different toppings on your caramel apples. My favorite ended up being the Oreos, but my husband's favorite was pistachio/chocolate chip. Get creative and try different varieties to see which is your favorite!
