Sharing Your Creativity - Missy's Gift Tags

Happy holidays, everyone! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and a guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. I have learned that the presents that you make on your own are the very best! Are you good at drawing, like me? Give someone a beautiful work of art. Do you love to dance? Put on a dance performance as a present. What about stories? Do you make up the most fantastic stories? Create a story about your family as a gift.

Whichever presents you decide to create, you may need a gift tag to introduce the present. Here is a fun and easy way to make gift tags.

Make your own holiday gift tags!

Supplies:

  • Printed PDF pattern
  • Scissors
  • Pen/pencil
  • Colored pencils/markers
  • Hole punch
  • Assorted construction/scrapbook/cardstock papers patterned and plain
  • String (cut to 10” pieces)
  • Glue

Instructions:

  1. Use your scissors to cut out the pattern pieces, both the “back part” and the “front part.”
  2. Choose a paper for your “back part.” I like to use patterned paper for this. Use a pen/pencil to trace the pattern onto the paper, then use your scissors to cut it out.
  3. Choose a paper for your “front part.” I like to use a plain paper, usually a lighter color (white, yellow, pink, light blue) for this. Use a pen/pencil to trace the pattern onto the paper, then use your scissors to cut it out.
  4. Glue the “front part” onto the center of the “back part.”
  5. Use your hole punch to make a hole near the pointier end of the “back part.” This is where you will tie the string.
  6. Decorate your tag. I like to make snowmen, Christmas trees, and holly berries with leaves by using the tiny holes from the hole puncher. Just glue them to your tag and embellish with colored pencils or markers.
  7. Fold a string in half and poke the looped end through the tag’s hole.
  8. Now take the other end, poke it through the looped end and pull.
  9. Write “To:” and “From:” on each tag with a message and attach them to your gifts or hang them on the tree.

Have fun and get creative decorating your gift tags. Your hole punches could also be bells, snowflakes, faces, or anything else wintery and festive. Use the tags to share your talents as gifts for your friends and family. Happy Holidays!
