Homeless in Utah

As Utah’s homeless issue continues to offer challenges for policy makers, the homeless, residents, and businesses, PBS Utah's Homeless in Utah Project exploring the families and individuals most affected and the programs offering services and resources.

The project, in consultation with a variety of service organizations and partners, includes two documentaries — Homeless at the End and A Home of Their Own â€” as well as community screenings and discussions. We have also compiled resources and news reports from The Salt Lake TribuneThe Deseret News, and KUER Radio. More than just television, KUED creates awareness and dialogue around this important issue.

A Home Of Their Own

Three families each want the same thing — a safe and affordable home of their own.

A Home of Their Own (Produced by Sally Shaum) follows the stories of three families living at the Road Home family shelter in Midvale Utah: a single working mother with four children; a single dad with a special needs child; and a mother determined to break the course of her drug addiction. This 30-minute documentary shows how they navigate the homeless system in Utah, how they came to it, and where they are going.

Homeless At The End

Where do Utah’s homeless go when suffering at the end, in the uneasy space between life and death?

Homeless at the End (Produced by Sally Shaum and Nancy Green) offers a rare glimpse into the lives of formerly homeless people as they struggle to come to terms with the end of their lives, and shows the need for a greater understanding and compassion for Utah’s terminally ill homeless as they face the end of life. The film follows one man in particular, James Adams, and his final journey at the INN Between after a terminal diagnosis.
