KUED’s Summer of Space Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

Press Release

This July, KUED launches Summer of Space to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Throughout the month, KUED presents a space-themed lineup of programming and digital content that showcases the history, technology, vision, and accomplishments in space – from the moon landing to the latest in space exploration. KUED’s spaced-themed events include festivities for families and space enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy.

KUED’s Summer of Space invites everyone to explore the farthest reaches of the universe with exceptional programming. Chasing the MoonfromAmerican Experience is a new six-hour documentary series, which reimagines the race to the moon for a new generation, upending much of the conventional mythology surrounding the effort. The three-part series premieres Monday, July 8-10 at 8:00 p.m. on KUED.

In addition to Chasing the Moon, KUED presents five new programs that blend the past, present, and future of space travel and the universe. Antiques Roadshow: Out of this World, NOVA’sBack to the Moon and The Planets, In 8 Days: The Journey of Apollo 11, and Ancient Skies.

Utah has close connections to space exploration, and KUED acknowledges those ties with notable stories about Utah’s role in advancing the efforts of the 21st-century space race.

What would life be like on Mars? KUED’s new series, This Is Utah transports viewers to a remote desert outpost where the crew of the Desert Mars Research Station is working to find out how to make life on the red planet a reality. Researchers and space buffs spend a week or more in a simulated space habitat never leaving the confines of a space suit nor breathing fresh air outside. Hear from Dr. Karl-Henrik Dahlqvist and the rest of the mission crew about everything from growing crops on Mars to teaching the next generation about space in the episode “Small Town, Big Vision” premiering Thursday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. on KUED.

Watch Dr. Bonnie Baxter and Jim Allen from The Mars Society onUtah Conversations with Ted Capener, Friday, July 12 at 7:30 p.m. on KUED. Baxter and Allen are determined to educate the public, the media, and the government about the benefits of exploring the red planet. With a chapter in Hanksville, The Mars Society is geared towards the exploration and settlement of the next frontier – Mars.

Take a trip down memory lane to the historic day in July 1969 when man first walked on the moon in KUED’s Moon Memories. KUED’s viewers and members shared their stories of what they remember of the moon landing. Select stories have been turned into short video featurettes to be distributed online and on social media. Enjoy Moon Memories at kued.org/summer-of-space.

For this year’s KUED Writers and Illustrators Contest, kids grades K-6 were invited to write and illustrate space-themed stories to celebrate the anniversary of the lunar landing. Elise Brimhall, KUED’s education coordinator said this about the contest, “This year, the kids were enthusiastic about the theme – their imaginations took off to create truly wonderful stories that are out of this world. KUED is pleased to support and celebrate the creativity of talented Utah children.” The first, second, and third place winning stories will be on display during the Moon Landing Anniversary Celebration. Stories are also posted online at kued.org/kids and will go on tour to locations throughout the state thanks to a partnership with the Utah Division of Arts and Museums.

Families and space fans of all ages are invited to celebrate the moon landing with KUED’s Summer of Space events. On Wednesday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m. KUED and the Clark Planetarium will host a special screening of the finale of the three-part series, Chasing the Moon!

The Summer of Space culminates with the Moon Landing Anniversary Celebration that coincides with the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on Saturday, July 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Clark Planetarium. KUED Kids is hosting a full day of family-friendly activities including moon-themed arts and crafts stations, virtual reality and moon gravity experiences, as well as a screening of PBS Kids episode “One Small Step” from Ready Jet Go.

When Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon, it was a moment the world looked skyward and anything seemed possible. Everyone came together to witness a remarkable achievement for all of mankind.
