KUED Kicks Off 27th Annual Reading Marathon
KUED is partnering with The City Library for the 27th Annual Reading Marathon Kickoff Party on Saturday, November 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Children, preschool through sixth grade, and their families are invited to this free event. Children can meet PBS KIDS character Daniel Tiger, and families can take a picture in the special Sesame Street 50th Anniversary photo booth. At the event, children can pick up a reading log, take home a free book, and enjoy fun STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities in celebration of the month-long reading challenge.
The Tracy Aviary, Natural History Museum of Utah, Bad Dog Arts, Ogden Nature Center, Utah Symphony & Utah Opera, Clark Planetarium, Discovery Gateway, and others will host activities for kids of all ages. Head Start will engage kids with mindfulness activities like yoga, while Westminster College will shoot off rockets! The Utah Film Center will show the quirky and sweet children's Swedish film "Up in the Sky" at 11 a.m. in the theatre, and Intermountain Therapy Animals will bring dogs to sit and read with. There will be something for everyone at this annual celebration of reading!
Last year 1,500 people joined KUED for the kickoff where they enjoyed activities throughout the library, and each child took home a free book to get started on the Reading Marathon.
The annual Reading Marathon encourages children to read 20 minutes every day from November 1 to 30 and to record their minutes on a reading log they can get at the event or download online. Children can also count the minutes that someone reads to them. So, it's a good time to read together as a family too.
Children who complete 20 minutes a day and turn in their forms by December 15 will receive an Adventure Pass. The Adventure Pass includes free entrance for the reader to the Natural History Museum of Utah, Hogle Zoo, Red Butte Garden, Thanksgiving Point, and more! The pass is valid in January, February, and March of 2020.
