KUED Presents Molly of Denali, Featuring Alaska Native Lead Character
Molly of Denali, a new animated series coming to KUED, follows the adventures of feisty and resourceful 10-year old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl who lives in the fictional village of Qyah, Alaska. Tune in to the premiere of Molly of Denali on Monday, July 15 at 2:00 p.m. on KUED Channel 7.
Molly helps her parents run the Denali Trading Post, a general store, bunkhouse, and transport hub, where she assists tourists, trekkers, and scientists, and sometimes rides along in Mom’s bush plane.
The series follows Molly along with her dog Suki and her friends Tooey and Trini on their daily adventures in Alaska, from fishing and paddling in a canoe competition, to delivering a camera to friends on a volcano via dog sled, to learning Native songs from village elders.
Molly of Denali is developed as part of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and PBS Ready To Learn Initiative. KUED has long played a critical role in providing educational resources to Utah’s children, particularly children who experience barriers to accessing resources, helping them to start school ready to learn and more likely to experience academic success. PBS Ready To Learn content has been implemented by KUED since its inception in 2005.
The groundbreaking series supports the important goals of the initiative, which includes representing cultural diversity and supporting children’s learning through a vital subject like informational text.
Molly of Denali is designed to help kids ages 4-8 develop knowledge and skills for interacting with informational texts through video content, interactive games, and real-world activities.
Molly’s life and adventures are enhanced and broadened by informational texts including books, online resources, field guides, historical archives, indigenous knowledge from elders, maps, charts, posters, photos, and more.
Each episode will include two 11-minute stories as well as interstitial content – including live-action segments featuring real children and regions in Alaska. Molly also shares the information that she gathers through a vlog, offering short-form videos in which she shares aspects of her life in Alaska with kids in the lower 48 states and around the world.
KUED is excited to bring the adventurous world of Molly of Denali to kids everywhere. Molly is an exciting new role model for all kids, and her friends and family are characters that resonate with everyone. Molly of Denali is about celebrating inclusiveness and diversity in ways that reinforces that everyone is more alike than different.
