KUED's online series exploring creativity

Mario Capecchi, Geneticist

Mario Capecchi, a Human Genetics professor at the University of Utah, thinks about creativity quite a lot...not only in terms of his work, but how to harness it in himself and instill it in his students. "There are genes for everything," he says when talking about creativity, "but genes don't do things...they simply give you a potential."

The Nobel Laureate, who developed a method to alter any gene in a mouse embryo, sees the challenges that come with creative thinking as motivation. "They said it was impossible," says Capecchi about his initial proposal to alter a mouse's genetics. "But my parents said that the difficult you do right away, the impossible takes a little longer."
