Series: America's 58 National Parks
Alaska: Katmai
Located on a peninsula in southern Alaska is this National Park, established in 1980. This area was named "The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes" in 1912 after volcano Novarupta's last major eruption left the land blanketed beneath 700 feet of pumice, ash and rock. Today, the park is flourishing, and is an important habitat for salmon and the brown bears.
