PBS NewsHour Weekend - episode: 1224H

Peru looks for reforms after a region is decimated by mining. In February, Peruvian troops and police were sent in to the Madre de Dios region of the Amazon Rainforest to disrupt widespread environmental devastation brought on by illegal gold mining. Since then, satellite imagery shows a 90 percent decline in new deforestation related to gold extraction, though environmentalists say the halt to the unpermitted mining won't last long without further reforms. In the second of a two-part series, special correspondent Leo Schwartz reports on new attempts to change mining practices in the region, and efforts to bring back heavily polluted sections of the Amazon decimated by gold miners.
