Missy's Blind Self Portrait

Email share

Hi friends! My name is Missy and I’m an artist and blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. It’s fun to take selfies with a phone. I bet you’ve taken a few before. But have you ever drawn a selfie or self portrait? Here’s a fun way to do just that.

Supplies

  • White copy paper or drawing paper
  • A hardback book or clipboard
  • Pencil
  • Black marker
  • Crayons
  • A mirror

Instructions

  1. Put your paper on your book or clipboard so you have a hard surface to draw on.
  2. Take these and your pencil into the bathroom (or in front of any mirror).
  3. With your pencil on the paper, look at yourself in the mirror.
  4. Draw exactly what you see. I like to start at the top of my head.
  5. Try to keep your pencil on the paper the whole time. And try not to look at your paper, just look at the parts of your face as you draw them.
  6. When you have drawn your whole face, lift up your pencil and take a look at your work. Does it look like you? Probably not, and that’s ok!
  7. Use your black marker to define the hair, eyes, nose, mouth, etc.
  8. Now use your crayons to color your self portrait.
  9. Write your name at the bottom and the year. This is your artist signature.

Wrap Up

Now you can hang your work in your bedroom or on the fridge. These self portraits won’t look exactly like you and that’s the point. They are an artistic representation of you. Be creative and have fun!
