Hi! My name is Missy and I’m an artist and blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. Have you ever had a sock go missing? Just one sock, out of a pair? It’s such a bummer and it’s hard to know what to do with that single, lonely sock. I figured out a fun way to use these stray socks.

Supplies: Socks, dry beans, rubber bands, 4 paper plates, and crayons.

Supplies:

  • 3 or more socks that have lost their mates
  • 3 or more rubber bands
  • Dry beans
  • 4 paper plates
  • Crayons

Fill your sock one-third of the way full with beans, then close it off with a rubber band.

Instructions:

  1. Open up a sock and dump in some dry beans. Fill it about ⅓ of the way full.
  2. Secure the beans in the sock with a rubber band.
  3. Fill your other socks with beans, just the same way, and tie them off with a rubber band.
  4. Take a paper plate and a crayon and draw a big “10” in the middle. You can color around the “10” as well.
  5. Take another plate and another crayon and draw a big “20” in the middle. You can color around the “20” as well.
  6. Do the same with the last two plates, drawing a “30” on one and a “40” on the other.
  7. Now you’re ready to play a bean bag toss game!

Once you've got your bean bags and paper plates ready, it's time to play!

How To Play:

  1. Set the plates in a straight line out in front of you with the “40” being the closest, then “30”, then “20”, then “10” being the closest to you.
  2. Establish a “starting line” a few feet in front of the “10” plate.
  3. Take 3 bean bags and throw them underhand, aiming to land on any of the plates.
  4. After the 3 bean bags have been thrown, see where they landed and add up your score.
  5. Now the next player has a turn to throw 3 bean bags.
  6. Add up their score. The player with the highest score wins!

Wrap-up:

This fun bean bag toss game can be played with family or friends. It’s a great way to get outside for a little bit. If you’d like to add other obstacles or ways to get points, feel free to assign points to recycled water bottles (to knock down with your bean bag) or an old hula hoop (throw your bean bag in the middle) placed near the starting line. Be creative and have fun!
