Missy's Find-It Ornament

This cute ornament doubles as a game! Small objects are hidden in the "sand" (in this case rice)

Hi! It's Missy, artist and blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. I remember being at a friend’s house during the holidays and playing with this find-it game when I was young. The game consisted of a water bottle full of sand. Hidden throughout the sand were tons of small objects, and there was a list attached to the water bottle that named each little object. The point of the game was to read the list and find each object one by one. I thought this idea would make a really fun ornament. Here’s how to make one!

Supplies: clear ornament, hot glue, small piece of paper, clear packing tape, scissors, hole punch, rice or sand, a funnel, 15 assorted tiny objects

Supplies:

  • Clear plastic or glass ball ornament
  • Hot glue
  • Small piece of paper cut into a rectangle (I used scrapbook paper and wrote on the back)
  • Clear packing tape
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Pen
  • Ribbon
  • Rice (I used about 1 ½ cups)
  • Funnel
  • 15 tiny objects (beads, thumbtacks, buttons, etc)

Here are some of the tiny objects I used for my find-it ornament!

Instructions:

  1. Use your pen rectangle of paper to write a list of all your tiny objects.
  2. Cover the paper in packing tape and use your scissors to trim the edges. I cut off two corners to make it look like a gift tag too.
  3. Take the top off your clear ornament and load all the tiny objects into it.
  4. Now use the funnel to help you put some rice into the ornament. Fill it just over half full with rice.
  5. Now put the ornament top back on. Use hot glue on the outside to seal the top, to make sure the rice and tiny objects don’t accidentally fall out. Let it dry completely.
  6. Use your scissors to cut about 10 inches of ribbon.
  7. Use your hole punch to make a hole in the top of the tiny objects list.
  8. Thread the ribbon through the hole you punched and attach the ribbon to the top of the ornament.
  9. Tie a knot in the end of the ribbon to create a big loop.
  10. Now shake the ornament and hunt for all the tiny objects on the list!

Once your find-it ornament is complete, challenge your friends or family members to see if they can find all of the objects!

Wrap-up:

Show your find-it ornament to family and friends and see if they can find all the tiny objects hidden inside. You can hang this ornament on your tree. Be creative and have fun!
