Missy's Pop-Up Dragon

Email share

Hey, hey! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and a guest blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. February 10th, 2024 marks a very special holiday for the Chinese community. It’s called Chinese New Year, the first day of the Lunar (Moon) calendar. In Chinese tradition, each year is symbolized by a different animal. 2024 is the year of the Dragon! I thought it would be fun to celebrate Chinese New Year by making a pop-up dragon.

Supplies

  • Printed Dragon pdf
  • 2 sheets of 8.5”x11” cardstock
  • 1 sheet of 12”x12” cardstock
  • Crayons
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. Use your crayons to color the dragon on your printed pdf page.
  2. Use your scissors to cut out the dragon. Leave a bit of white space around the edges (I call this a “halo”).
  3. Glue your dragon to one of the 8.5”x11” sheets of cardstock.
  4. Use your scissors again to cut out the dragon. Again, leave a “halo” around the edge.
  5. Now take your second sheet of 8.5”x11 cardstock and fold it in half hamburger style.
  6. Use your pencil to draw two little lines out from the middle of the fold. Make the lines about 1” long and about half an inch apart.
  7. Draw a straight line up and down to connect them. These pencil lines do not need to be exact.
  8. Use your scissors to cut each of those first two lines, stop at the third line you drew.
  9. Now fold on the third line, this creates a little flap.
  10. Open up the paper, turn it over, and pull the little flap towards you.
  11. Now glue your dragon to the bottom half of that flap. Make sure the bottom of the dragon lines up with the bottom of the fold line.
  12. Turn your paper with the dragon to the backside and spread glue all over EXCEPT for the flap in the middle.
  13. Glue this to the third sheet of cardstock (the 12”x12” piece). You can leave a “halo” around the edges if you like.
  14. Use your scissors to cut off the excess paper from the third sheet.
  15. Now cut out the words from your printed pdf page.
  16. Use your crayons to color the words and glue them anywhere you like.

Wrap Up

You have a pop-up dragon! Make the dragon pop out by opening and closing your papers like a book. Be creative and have fun!
