Howdy! It’s Missy! Artist and blogger back with another arts and crafts activity. When I used to babysit my nephew, we liked to make up fantastic stories. He had these 6-sided dice with little images on each side: a dinosaur, lightning, a wormy apple, etc. We would roll the dice and whatever image was on top, we’d add it to our story. I thought it would be fun to create some story dice of our own.

Supplies:

  • Printed PDF pattern
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Colored pencils, crayons or markers

Supplies: printed PDF pattern, scissors, glue, colored pencils, crayons, or markers.

Instructions:

  1. Use your scissors to cut out the pattern along the solid lines.
  2. Use your colored pencils to draw an image in each square. Alternate between character, object and event.

Character ideas: Dragon, firefighter, cat, or queen

Object ideas: Scissors, light bulb, firecrackers, or cookies

Event: Thunderstorm, tropical vacation, birthday party, or a doctor visit

  1. Fold along each of the dotted lines on the pattern. You’ll find that folding it creates a box.
  2. Glue each tab to secure your box.
  3. Make at least 2 more of these. Now you have a set of Story Dice!

Wrap-up:

With your family and friends, take turns rolling the dice and adding the image on the face-up side to a story. You can also play with the dice yourself and create your own story. Write the story, draw the story, or both, in the book you learned to make earlier this month. Be creative and have fun!
