Missy's Pastel Transfer Trick

Email share

Hi! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and guest blogger here at PBS Utah. I like to experiment with many different art supplies: markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc. Today I pulled out some oil pastels and figured out a fun trick.

Supplies

  • 2 sheets printer paper
  • Oil pastels
  • Tape
  • Ball point pen

Instructions

  1. Take one sheet of paper and color all over it with your oil pastels. You can use one color or many colors. Fill the entire page.
  2. Take your other sheet of paper and tape it to the table.
  3. Tape your first sheet of paper, pastel side down, on top of the blank paper.
  4. Use your pen to draw a scene on the paper (the back of the pastel filled paper). I drew a bunch of animals with a tree and a swamp. Fill the page.
  5. Now lift up your top paper. The oil pastel will have transferred to the blank sheet underneath, only in the places you drew with your pen.

Wrap Up

Experiment again and again with different colors of oil pastel and draw different scenes: space scenes, sports scenes, indoor scenes, school scenes, etc. Be creative and have fun!
