Hello friends! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and blogger for PBS KIDS Utah. Valentine’s Day is coming up. I thought it would be fun to teach you how to make a paper heart and turn those paper hearts into a cute dog Valentine’s card!

Supplies: Scissors, glue stick, markers, white printer paper, and colored construction paper

Supplies:

  • 1 sheet of white printer paper
  • Colored construction papers
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Markers

Start by cutting out your paper hearts. If you fold the paper in half, it will be easier to cut out a perfect paper heart!

Instructions:

  1. Fold one of your sheets of colored construction paper in half.
  2. Starting at the fold, use your marker to draw a shape like a candy cane. Connect each end to the fold.
  3. Now cut along the line you made and unfold. It’s a heart!
  4. Make lots of hearts in different colors, some big, some small. You can even make a heart within a heart.
  5. Now take your white paper and fold it in half hamburger style. This will be your card.
  6. Create a dog out of the colorful hearts: One big heart turned upside-down for the body, one turned upside-down for the head, a couple hearts for ears, etc.
  7. Use your marker to add extra details like a tongue or eyes.
  8. Use extra hearts to decorate the inside of the card.
  9. Write a Valentine’s Day message on the inside.

Each paper heart will become a different part of your Valentine's dog's body. If you want, you can use a different color for each one!

Wrap-up:

Now you have a fun Valentine’s dog card to give to a friend or family member! This is a great way to show your love and appreciation for the people in your life. Be creative and have fun!

Now you can give your finished Valentine to someone special! <3
